Roma, Italia. Part 2.2 The Colosseum.

During our free time at lunch, we shopped around the Vatican City and bought 3 tiny crosses, one for me and my two sisters, that would be blessed by the Pope! Next door was a sandwich shop. Daniel had chicken and I had ham - they were delicious. Afterwards, we headed for The Roman Coliseum. The internet tells me this: Capable of seating 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. As well as the gladiatorial games, other public spectacles were held there, such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas. It has been estimated that about 500,000 people and over a million wild animals died in the Colosseum games.

The wooden floor is a modern addition. However, the floor used to be covered with wood and sand. Everything beneath the ground is the hypogeum. This area is two layers and consists of tunels and cages where the gladiators and animals were kept before fights.

The entire thing used to be covered in marble. Just a tiny bit remains.
